Where to Stay in Essaouira

Choosing where to stay in Essaouira is mostly a choice of area. Here is how a medina riad, the beach promenade, Diabat and Sidi Kaouki compare, and what to ask before you book.

Four areas to choose from

Essaouira is compact, and most visitors move between three places: the medina, the fishing port and the beach. Where you sleep decides how far you walk and whether you can park. This page compares four areas by location. It does not rank individual hotels and does not list room prices, because those depend on your dates.

The local tourism portal describes hotels in the medina and separates the quarters of Chbanat, the Kasbah and the Mellah. It gives the position relative to the walls, the harbor and the beach as the main way to orient yourself.

A riad in the medina

The medina is the historic town and a World Heritage site. Staying inside the walls puts the ramparts, the lanes and the port within walking distance. The local tourism portal describes the medina as a pedestrian zone. That means arrival with a big suitcase takes planning.

  • Ask how far the hotel is from the nearest gate and whether staff help with luggage.
  • Ask about stairs, the floor of the room and whether a lift exists.
  • Do not assume a sea view, quiet or step-free access. None of these is a given in the medina.
  • If you arrive by car, ask where to park. Some hotels have private parking near the Bab Marrakech gate and ask drivers to call ahead. That is an arrangement of individual hotels, not a right for every guest.

Read the medina guide to understand the layout before you pick a quarter.

The crenellated city walls by the port

The beach promenade

A hotel along the beach puts you next to the long seafront walk and the places to eat on it. It is also where wind sports happen, so expect to see kites and feel the trade winds. Distance to the medina and port is the thing to check, and a map helps more than a hotel's description of "close to the beach".

Parking at the beach is paid, so ask whether your hotel includes it. See the beach guide for swimming advice and camel rides.

Kitesurfers and walkers on the beach at Essaouira

Diabat and Sidi Kaouki

Diabat is the area where a riding ranch offers guided rides, and Sidi Kaouki is a beach about 20 km south of Essaouira on the N1, used for wind sports. A travel website gives about 25 km for Sidi Kaouki, so the distance depends on where you start. Staying in either place trades walkability for space and a different pace.

Ask your host how you will get to town, how long the ride takes and what it costs, because fixed transfer prices are not published here. Plan the way back at night as well. Read the surfing guide if wind sports are your reason for staying out of town.

Arriving and getting around

Essaouira has no train station. Supratours coaches arrive near the medina, and CTM coaches arrive in the new town, so your arrival point may affect which area is easiest. The airport is about 16 to 18 km from town, and the local portal lists about 150 MAD by day and 200 MAD by night for an airport taxi. Those figures are undated, so confirm the price locally. Our Marrakech to Essaouira guide covers coaches, taxis and driving.

Before you book, compare these points for the places you like: walk from the nearest gate, luggage help, stairs, room position, parking, and real distance to the beach. Prices and availability change by date and season, so look at your exact dates. A minimum stay and any local tax are also worth asking about.

Where to stay in Essaouira: frequently asked questions

Should I stay inside the medina?

If you want to walk to the walls, souks and port, yes. Ask about luggage, stairs and parking, because the medina is a pedestrian zone.

Can I bring a car into the medina?

No, the medina is pedestrian. Parking near the medina can be tight in high season, and parking at the beach is paid.

Is a hotel on the beach better?

It depends. It puts you next to the promenade and the wind sports. Check the distance to the medina and port on a map.

Is Sidi Kaouki a good base?

For wind sports it can be, at about 20 km from Essaouira. If you want to see the medina daily, check the transport first.

Does the hotel have a sea view?

Do not assume it. Ask for the room position and a photo of the view before you book.

How do I get from the coach to my hotel?

Supratours arrives near the medina, and CTM arrives in the new town. Ask the hotel how to walk or ride from your drop-off point, and whether it can send help with luggage.
