The beach at a glance
Essaouira sits directly on the Atlantic coast, and the trade winds (alizΓ©s) are part of the town's character. The beach is a place for walking, kites, windsurfers and fresh air more than for a calm, windless swim. Plan with that in mind and the beach works well.
A promenade runs along the sand. The local tourism portal describes an esplanade of about 2 km with places to eat and drink. That is the length of the promenade, not of every beach around the town.

What to expect on the sand
Wind, walking and a long view of the water.
Wind most of the year
The Atlantic wind is the reason kitesurfers and windsurfers come. On a gusty day, sand blows and the air feels cooler than the temperature suggests. Bring a windproof layer even in warm months. Our weather guide has monthly averages and wind data.
Walking and watching
The promenade is the easiest way to see the beach without getting into the water. You can watch the kites in the bay and stop at a cafe. The town's old walls and the harbor are close, so a beach walk fits into a day in the medina.
Getting there and parking
The beach and the medina are the two main areas visitors move between, and the promenade connects the beach side of town. If you come by car, parking at the beach is paid, and parking near the medina can be tight in high season.
Rocks and tide pools
Parts of the shore have rocks in front of the sand and along the coast. Wear shoes with grip if you want to walk there, and watch the waves.

Swimming: how to approach it
You can find people in the water, but the town is better known for wind than for calm bathing. The German Federal Foreign Office asks visitors to Moroccan beaches to follow bans, warning signs and local instructions. It also notes that wastewater pollution can occur at some points along the coast.
- Look for warning signs and flags before you go in, and follow any instructions.
- Ask your hotel or host where people swim on the day, because wind and waves change quickly.
- Keep children close to you in shallow water and do not swim alone.
- Avoid contact with stray animals on the beach, as the Federal Foreign Office advises for Morocco in general.
Kitesurfers use the same bay, so stay away from areas where kites are in the air. The surfing and kitesurfing page explains the water sports.

Camel rides and horse riding in Diabat
Prices and rules are those of one riding ranch, listed in 2026.
Diabat is the area where the local tourism portal lists a ranch with guided rides. The ranch offers a one-hour dromedary ride for β¬23 per person. You can choose a slot from 10:00 to 13:00 or from 13:00 to 17:00. The booking page also shows some slots as sold out, so book ahead and check the date you want.
| Rider | Price rule at this ranch |
|---|---|
| Children aged 0 to 4 | Free when sharing with a parent, at most 1 child per adult |
| Children aged 5 to 8 | Half price when sharing, full price when riding alone |
| Everyone aged 9 and over | Full price (β¬23 for one hour) |
| Maximum per dromedary | 2 people, babies included |
This is one operator's price, not a general tariff for the beach. Other operators and horse rides will have their own prices, and there is no common price list. About the animals: you cannot judge welfare from a booking page. Look at the animals before you pay. Skip any ride where the animals look thin, tired or overloaded.
Beyond the town beach
Sidi Kaouki lies about 20 km south of Essaouira. The local tourism portal gives the route via the N1 towards Agadir and describes the beach as a place that uses the trade winds for water sports. A travel website gives about 25 km. The two numbers measure from different points, so treat both as rough. Read more in the Sidi Kaouki section of our surfing guide.
The island of Mogador is visible from the coast. The portal describes the islands as a bird reserve and says you may not set foot on the island. A boat trip around it is mentioned as a possibility, but do not count on one running on your date.
