Essaouira at a glance
Essaouira sits on Morocco's Atlantic coast and was known as Mogador in the past. It is a fortified port town of the 18th century, planned under Sultan Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdallah. Its medina has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2001. UNESCO describes a mix of European military architecture and North African town planning, and a trading center that linked Morocco, sub-Saharan Africa and Europe.
Most visitors arrive from Marrakech, about three hours away by road. The town is compact. The medina, the fishing port and the beach are all you need to find your way around, and the Atlantic trade winds shape the weather and the water sports. This guide is independent and has no link to the city, to tourism authorities or to any operator.

What to see first
Start in the medina. It is a pedestrian zone of narrow lanes, gates and blue-painted doors. At its north-western tip the Skala de la Kasbah carries a row of cannons over the sea, and the climb is free. At the harbor, fishermen sell fish, repair nets and unload trawlers, and grill restaurants cook the catch.
Then walk down to the beach. A promenade of about 2 km runs along the sand with cafes and restaurants. The wind is a fact of life here, which is why surfers and kitesurfers come. If you want company on the way, walking tours, cooking classes and day trips are covered on our tours page.

Practical points, as of 20 October 2026.
Entry and money
Entry rules depend on your nationality. German citizens need a passport or provisional passport, not an ID card, valid for at least 6 months on arrival, and need no visa for tourist stays up to 90 days, according to German government travel advice. Everyone else should check their own government's advice. The currency is the Moroccan dirham, written DH, Dhs or MAD.
Wind and water
The trade winds are part of Essaouira's character, but they are not a daily guarantee. On the beach, follow bans, warning signs and local instructions. Wastewater pollution can occur at individual spots on Moroccan beaches, so look before you swim. Keep your distance from stray animals.
Essaouira beach โBy car
The medina is for pedestrians. Parking at the beach is paid, and spaces near the medina can be scarce in high season. German travel advice asks drivers to take care with pedestrians, animals and unlit vehicles on Moroccan roads.
Where to stay โGnaoua festival
The 27th edition ran from 25 to 27 June 2026. The organizer announces the 28th for 24 to 26 June 2027. Some stages and concerts are ticketed, so check the organizer's current ticket information before you plan around it.
Getting to Essaouira
By road, by air, and from the airport to town.
From Marrakech
CTM and Supratours serve Essaouira, and grand taxis for up to six passengers leave from the Bab Doukkala area in Marrakech, not to be confused with the gate in Essaouira. A hotel in Essaouira gives about 3 hours for the Supratours bus from Marrakech station and about 2 hours 30 minutes by car. Essaouira has no railway station. Check the current timetable and fare before you go.
Marrakech to Essaouira โBy air
Essaouira-Mogador airport has the code ESU. Airlines advertise routes from London Stansted, Madrid, Paris-Orly, Bordeaux and Lyon. An easyJet route from Nantes is announced from 27 October 2026, on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Frequencies change with the season, so check the current schedule.
Airport to town
The airport lies 16 to 18 km from the town, and the local portal gives both figures. It lists a taxi at 150 MAD by day and 200 MAD at night, and an airport bus at 6 MAD, with about 20 minutes of travel. These are undated portal figures, so confirm the price before you get in.
Agadir
Agadir lies on the same coast to the south and has its own guide, Visit Agadir. The road from Essaouira toward Agadir is also the way to Sidi Kaouki, about 20 km south.

Essaouira: frequently asked questions
Is Essaouira a good day trip from Marrakech?
It works, but the road eats time. The local portal gives about 3 hours from Marrakech airport, so a return trip on the same day is around 6 hours of transfer before you see anything. Staying a night gives you the harbor in the morning and the ramparts at sunset.
How much does the Skala du Port cost?
In 2026 the Ministry of Culture lists 60 MAD for foreign adults and 30 MAD for foreign children aged 7 to 13. Moroccan or resident adults pay 30 MAD and children aged 7 to 13 pay 10 MAD. The Skala de la Kasbah is a separate bastion and is listed with free access.
Can I visit the island of Mogador?
No. The local tourism portal describes the islands as a bird reserve and states that landing is forbidden. A boat trip around the island is mentioned as an option, but do not book anything that promises a landing or a walk on the island.
Do I need a visa for Essaouira?
It depends on your passport. German citizens can travel without a visa for tourist stays up to 90 days with a passport that is valid for at least 6 months on arrival. For other nationalities, check your own government's travel advice.
Is Essaouira really windy?
Yes, the Atlantic trade winds are part of the local character, and they bring windsurfers and kitesurfers. It is not a guarantee for every day. In the monthly rainfall table of the Japan Meteorological Agency, June to August are almost dry, with at most 0.7 mm in any of these months, while December is the wettest month at 76.8 mm.
Is this the official website of Essaouira?
No. This is an independent travel guide. It is not run by the city, by the Moroccan tourism authorities, by a festival organizer, a riad, a surf school or any tour operator.
