Surfing and Kitesurfing in Essaouira

Essaouira is known for wind, and wind decides when kitesurfing works. Here are the seasons, a month by month wind table, the difference between surfing and kitesurfing and Sidi Kaouki.

Two sports, two conditions

Surfing and kitesurfing are different activities in Essaouira. Kitesurfing needs wind. Surfing needs swell, meaning waves from the Atlantic. A day that is perfect for one is not always good for the other. Decide which you want first and plan the month around it.

The national tourism board links Essaouira to the trade winds (alizΓ©s) and water sports. That describes the place, not a guarantee for any single day. A local kitesurf school gives its own seasons, and they are shown below as that school's view.

Seasons from a school's point of view

These are recommendations from a local operator, not rules, and they cannot promise conditions on your dates.

Kite and wing: May to September

The operator names these months as the main time for kitesurfing and wing. Wind is strongest in the summer months of the table below.

Surfing: October to April

The same operator says the Atlantic swells are more regular in these months. Surfing is possible all year, so a summer trip does not rule it out.

Shoulder months

In spring and autumn, wind and swell can both be present. Ask the school what the forecast looks like the week you arrive.

Wind by month

A published analysis by a local surf and kite school, based on ERA5 model data from 1 January 2021 to 31 December 2025 for a point near Essaouira.

November1359 %
December1140 %

How to read it: a "wind day" here means the highest wind of the day, measured at 10 m height, reached at least 12 knots (about 22 km/h). The monthly speed is the average of those daily maximums. Over the year this gives about 243 days, or 67 %.

A daily maximum can be a short gust. It does not mean you can kite all day, and it is not the chance that a lesson will go ahead. The figures come from model data for a point near the town, not from a station on your beach.

Surfing in Essaouira

Surfing here means Atlantic swell. Waves come from the ocean, and the coast has rocky stretches as well as sand. Swell and wind are separate things, so look at the forecast for both.

  • Book a lesson or rental from a school and ask about the spot of the day.
  • Ask which areas are used by surfers and which by kites, so you stay out of the way.
  • Ask the school about the water conditions on the day before you go in.

For swimming and the promenade, see the beach guide.

Kitesurfing in Essaouira

The bay in front of the town is where you see kites in the sky on windy days. Wind strength varies by month, as the table shows. July and August have the highest averages, and December the lowest.

  • Beginners should start with a lesson from a qualified instructor, not with borrowed gear.
  • Ask the school which wind range suits your level.
  • Spectators should keep away from the landing and launching areas.

Prices for lessons and rental differ by school, so compare a few before you book. There is no common price list.

Sidi Kaouki

Sidi Kaouki is a beach south of Essaouira. The local tourism portal gives the distance as 20 km and the route as the N1 towards Agadir, and says the beach uses the trade winds for wind sports. A travel website gives about 25 km. The figures start from different points, so allow for both.

Operating hours for water sports, lifeguard cover and fixed transfer prices are things to ask about when you book. Do not assume that lessons run every day. If you plan the trip as a day out, agree your ride back in advance.
