Twelve things to do, in walking order
The list starts inside the walls, moves to the harbor and the Jewish heritage of the old town, and then goes out to the beach, the water and the coast. The first seven entries are on foot. Entries 8 to 12 are about the Atlantic side of town and the day trips that start from it.
The order is a suggested route, not a ranking. Surfing and kitesurfing are listed as activities, not as monuments. Prices are those published for 2026. Where an opening time or a fee is missing, check it locally before you go.

Inside the walls and at the harbor
Four experiences that you can combine in a single morning.
1. Explore the medina
The medina of Essaouira, formerly Mogador, is a fortified port town of the 18th century and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. UNESCO points to the blend of European military architecture and North African town planning. The lanes are for pedestrians, so leave the car outside.
The medina โ2. Climb the Skala de la Kasbah
This bastion at the north-western tip of the medina is a gun platform with cannons, and guidebooks often call it the Skala de la Ville. It dates from 1765 and has free access. Former rooms for weapons and ammunition lie inside, and workshops of inlay craftsmen sit below. Check on site when the platform is open.
3. Visit the Skala du Port
This is a different monument, at the harbor, and it has its own ticket. In 2026 the Ministry of Culture lists 60 MAD for foreign adults and 30 MAD for foreign children aged 7 to 13. Hours of 09:00 to 17:00 appear on the ministry ticket page. Check them at the gate. Do not confuse it with the Skala de la Kasbah.
The port โ4. Watch the fishing port
The port is the working heart of the town. The local portal describes fish stalls, net repairs, trawlers coming in, a fish auction hall and restaurants grilling fish and seafood. Access to the harbor is free, but that does not mean every work area is open to visitors.

Gates and Jewish heritage
Three experiences that show how many communities shaped the town.
5. Walk through Bab Doukkala
One of the main gates of the medina, also called Bab Safi or Bab Sidi Bouzerktoune. The local portal dates it to the 18th century, under Sultan Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdallah, and lists free access.
6. Walk through the Mellah
The Mellah is the historic Jewish quarter. Jewish settlement dates from 1764, and the quarter was laid out on the order of Sultan Moulay Slimane in 1807. It is not a fully Jewish neighborhood today. Walk it with respect and ask before you photograph people.
7. Visit Bayt Dakira
Bayt Dakira keeps the memory of Jewish life and of the relations between Judaism and Islam. It is linked to the synagogue of Simon Attias, which the local portal places in the old kasbah, on Rue Ziry Ibn Atiyah, with visitor access. Check the current hours and entry fee before you go.
Beach, wind and coast
Five experiences on and around the Atlantic.
8. Walk the beach promenade
An esplanade of about 2 km runs along the beach, with cafes and restaurants. It is the easiest place to feel the wind. Swimming is a separate question: the Atlantic is rough, and German government advice asks visitors to follow bans, warning signs and local instructions on Moroccan beaches. Wastewater pollution can occur at single spots.
Essaouira beach โ9. Try surfing
One local school says surfing is possible all year, with more regular Atlantic swells from October to April. That is the provider's view of the season, not a promise for your dates. Surfing and kitesurfing are different sports with different needs.
Surfing and kitesurfing โ10. Try kitesurfing
The same school names May to September as the main season for kite and wing. Its wind analysis for 2021 to 2025 counts the share of days with a peak wind of at least 12 knots: 46% in January, 79% in May, 91% in July, 94% in August and 40% in December. A day that reaches 12 knots for a short time is not a full kiting day, so use the figures as a guide only.
11. Go to Sidi Kaouki
This coastal spot lies about 20 km south of Essaouira on the N1 toward Agadir, according to the local portal. Another travel site gives about 25 km, so the distance depends on where you start. It is known for water sports that use the trade winds.
12. Ride in Diabat
A ranch in Diabat offers guided rides. One listing for a one-hour dromedary ride shows โฌ23, with slots from 10:00 to 13:00 or 13:00 to 17:00, and a sold-out notice for some dates, so book ahead. Children aged 0 to 4 ride free when sharing with a parent, at most one child per adult, and a dromedary carries at most two people. Animal welfare standards differ between operators, so look at the animals' condition, water and shade before you pay.

Things to do in Essaouira: frequently asked questions
Can I visit the island of Mogador?
No. The local tourism portal describes the islands as a bird reserve and states that landing is forbidden. A boat trip around the island is mentioned as an option. Do not book a trip that promises a walk on the island.
Are the Skala de la Kasbah and the Skala du Port the same?
No. The Skala de la Kasbah is the bastion at the north-western tip of the medina, with cannons and free access. The Skala du Port is a separate monument at the harbor with a ministry ticket of 60 MAD for foreign adults in 2026.
Which sights are free?
The Skala de la Kasbah and Bab Doukkala are listed with free access, and so is the harbor. The Skala du Port is ticketed. For Bayt Dakira, check the current entry rules on site.
Is it safe to swim at the beach?
Follow bans, warning signs and local instructions. The Atlantic can be rough and the wind is strong. German government advice also notes that wastewater pollution can occur at single beach spots in Morocco and recommends avoiding contact with animals.
When is the main wind season?
One local kite school names May to September as the main season for kite and wing, and October to April for regular surf swells. This is the school's own view, so ask your instructor about the conditions on your day.
